Blessing of the New Fire
Blessing of the Paschal Candle
Renewal of Baptismal Vows
Holy Eucharist
More
than in any other service the Great Vigil of Easter brings
together all the many elements of the Christian Faith as the church
celebrates what it is ot be a Christian, recalling God’s great acts
towards his people, and the presence of Christ our Redeemer and
Lord. It is actually the prototype for the other services of the
year.
As our
Principal Easter Service, the Vigil begins in darkness
(representing death) and ends with the brightness of Christ’s
resurrection. The service, rich in symbolism, includes the lighting
of the new fire and the Paschal Candle (symbol of Christ, the Light
of the Word), the Old Testament prophecies, Renewal of Baptismal
Vows and the first Mass of Easter.
“How
blessed is this night,
when
earth and heaven are joined
and
man is reconciled to God.”
Alleluia. Alleluia. Alleluia.
